Special Educational Needs: Young Offenders

Volume 502: debated on Monday 14 December 2009

To ask the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families how many posts there were for learning support assistants in (a) young offender institutions and (b) secure training centres in England and Wales (i) on the most recent date for which figures are available and (ii) on the same date in each of the last five years; and how many such posts were vacant in each case. (305394)

Figures for the number of Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) across the youth justice secure estate are not routinely recorded centrally. However, information from the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) indicates that in September 2009, there were 153 LSC funded LSAs in the 14 public sector Prison Service YOIs in England, and the LSC is not aware of any current vacancies for LSAs in these establishments.

This information is not collected centrally for the two privately managed YOIs (one of which is in Wales) and the four secure training centres.
