To ask the Secretary of State for Health what the (a) average and (b) highest non-consolidated performance related payment for senior civil servants in his Department was in cash terms in each of the last five years. (303072)

[holding answer 30 November 2009]: Non-consolidated performance payments are made under the terms set out in the Government's response to the recommendations of the independent Senior Salaries Review Body. A close and effective link between pay and performance and increased use of variable pay is a key element of the reward arrangements for the senior civil service.
