Volume 502: debated on Monday 14 December 2009

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate HM Revenue and Customs has made of the number of pensioners in (a) Chorley and (b) Lancashire who will be contacted with regards to an overpayment of tax on bank or building society interest. (306699)

As part of the Taxback campaign announced at Budget 2009, HM Revenue and Customs have contacted all 3.4 million beneficiaries of pension credit to encourage those who are overpaying tax on their bank and building society interest to claim it back and, where eligible, to register to receive future interest payments without tax deducted. The latest information on the number of pension credit beneficiaries (May 2009), shows that there were 5,330 beneficiaries in Chorley and 68,710 in Lancashire.
