Prisons: Drugs

Volume 504: debated on Thursday 21 January 2010

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice how many internal audits of mandatory drug testing have been carried out in each of the last two years; and if he will publish them. (300954)

National Offender Management Service's (NOMS) Internal Audit completed two audits of mandatory drug testing (MDT) in the last two years. A follow-up audit which assessed progress made in implementing recommendations made in an earlier report was completed in 2008. A further full audit of MDT was completed in August 2009. From January 2010, Internal Audit will undertake a regular programme of MDT audits. This will be become part of the existing establishment audit programme and will review MDT procedures in approximately 35 establishments per year. Reports are published internally.
