Departmental Food

Volume 504: debated on Thursday 21 January 2010

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change what estimate he has made of the quantity of food waste generated by his Department in each year for which figures are available. (310810)

DECC endeavours to send as much of its food waste as possible for environmentally-friendly treatment (generally composting) rather than to landfill. The total amount of food waste sent for treatment in this way, included as part of the Sustainable Operations on the Government Estate reporting process is 6.88 tonnes for January 2009 to December 2009.

Some additional food waste, which has not been quantified, may have entered the residual waste stream and been sent to landfill.
