To ask the Secretary of State for Defence who was authorised to inform the BBC's security correspondent Frank Gardner about the attempt by special forces to rescue Paul and Rachel Chandler; for what reasons that authorisation was given; what account was taken of the effects of the disclosure on the safety of the Chandlers; and if he will make a statement. It is long-standing policy not to comment on matters relating to UK special forces, as their disclosure would, or would be likely to prejudice the capability, effectiveness or security of the armed forces.
