Public Lavatories

Volume 505: debated on Tuesday 2 February 2010

To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government how many public conveniences there are in each local authority area; and how many have closed in each such area in each of the last 10 years. (314901)

The provision and maintenance of toilets in public places is at the discretion of local authorities who have, under section 87 of the Public Health Act 1936, a power to provide public conveniences, but no duty to do so. For this reason, the information requested is not held centrally.
