National Insurance Contributions: Young People

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much national insurance was paid by 16 and 17 year-olds resident in Scotland between 6 April 2008 and 5 April 2009; and what percentage of national insurance raised in Scotland this represents. (315044)

The latest available national insurance contribution data are for 2007-08. Employee and employer class 1 contributions for 16 and 17-year-olds in Scotland between 6 April 2007 and 5 April 2008 are estimated to be around £5 million. estimates for class 2, 3 and 4 are not available.

The total national insurance contributed by Scotland is estimated to be around £7.7 billion.
