Dementia: Health Services

Volume 506: debated on Monday 22 February 2010

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what guidance his Department issues to healthcare professionals on improvement of recognition rates for vascular dementia; and what progress has been made in implementing his Department’s dementia strategies. (317929)

Improving services for people with dementia including vascular dementia is a Government priority, and we have already identified it as a priority for the national health service in the operating framework. This will help to ensure that dementia is prioritised locally where further improvement may be needed.

Early diagnosis of dementia including vascular dementia is a key part of the National Dementia Strategy, which was published a year ago and will be implemented over a five-year period. The joint National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence and Social Care Institute for Excellence clinical guideline for England provides guidance to health care professionals for all types of dementia.
