Departmental Manpower

Volume 507: debated on Tuesday 9 March 2010

To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions how many performance reviews were undertaken in respect of staff of (a) her Department and (b) its agencies in each of the last five years; in how many cases performance was rated as unsatisfactory or below; how many staff left as a direct result of such a rating; and what percentage of full-time equivalent staff this represented. (313821)

The Department for Work and Pensions performance management framework covers a range of HR procedures including attendance, discipline and performance appraisals. The Department's policy stipulates that performance discussions should take place at least quarterly but we do not hold information centrally on how many actually take place.

The following table sets out the number of staff dismissed for unsatisfactory performance covering attendance, discipline and work performance. Information on the number of staff with an unsatisfactory year-end performance rating is only available from April 2007.

Numbers of staff who have been dismissed for ‘unsatisfactory performance’ (April 2007 to March 2009)
