Courts: Video Conferencing

Volume 507: debated on Tuesday 16 March 2010

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice what estimate he has made of the cost to the public purse of the virtual court pilot at Camberwell Green magistrates court of (a) police officers, (b) court staff, (c) other court operational costs, excluding staff, (d) Crown Prosecution staff and (e) probation staff. (322049)

The evaluation of the Virtual Courts pilot, which began in May 2009, will assess any variation in the costs of operational staff required to administer the process, compared with the traditional court process. It will also consider the costs of the supporting technology. The final report is expected in autumn 2010.

The total project costs for the pilot are approximately £5 million. This includes the costs of developing the technical infrastructure required to support it, but excludes operational staff costs.
