Animal Experiments

Volume 508: debated on Monday 29 March 2010

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what budgetary provision his Department has made in 2010-11 for the conducting, directly or otherwise, of scientific procedures on animals pursuant to his Department's objectives; and how much was spent on this in 2009-10. (323212)

The Home Office administers a cross-Government account to fund counter-terrorism research. None of that money is ring-fenced for animal research; and no details are held of spending on animal research in 2009-10, or planned spending for this purpose in 2010-11.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many animals of each species were used in scientific procedures (a) commissioned directly by his Department and (b) otherwise undertaken pursuant to decisions taken by his Department in the most recent year for which figures are available. (323214)

In 2009, a total of 170 animals were used in scientific procedures commissioned directly or otherwise by the Home Office, comprising 120 mice, 38 guinea pigs and 12 mini pigs.
