Farmhouse Cider: Registered Producers

asked Her Majesty's Government:How many farmhouse cider producers making under (1) 15,000 gallons, (2) 10,000 gallons, (3) 7,500 gallons, (4) 5,000 gallons annually are registered and still in production in each county.

There is no central record of the quantity of cider produced by individual makers, but on the information available, which does not differentiate between farmhouse and other cider producers, the figures for the year ended 31st March 1978 are:—

tax and surtax/higher rate of tax raised from the top 1 per cent., 5 per cent., 10 per cent., and each subsequent decile group of income taxpayers in 1945, 1950, 1955, 1959 and each year since 1964.

The figures in the following table are for the fiscal years 1949–50, 1959–60, and for each year from 1969–70 to 1976–77 inclusive. Data for 1945 are not obtainable, and those for 1955 and 1964 to 1968 inclusive could not be obtained without a disproportionate expenditure of resources.

Scottish Prisons: Diets

asked Her Majesty's Government:Whether they will withdraw from Scottish Prison Regulations the provision permitting disciplinary diets, thus bringing the practice in Scotland into accord with the Regulations for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

It is the intention to do so at a convenient opportunity for the revision of the rules. Special diets have not been used as a punishment in the Scottish penal system since 1971.

Seal Cull: Communications

asked Her Majesty's Government:How many letters, telegrams and other messages were received at the Prime Minister's Office relating to the proposed cull of seals in the Orkneys.

asked Her Majesty's Government:What were the numbers of in-patient discharges and deaths and new out-patient attendances, including accident and emergency attendances at National Health Service hospitals in Great Britain in the 12 months to December 1970 and in December of each subsequent year.
