With reference to the Chevaline programme for the development of Polaris missiles, which is close to completion at a total cost of £1,000,000,000, to state the amount expended in each fiscal year, identifying the vote, sub-vote and item headings under which the expenditure was authorised.

It is not possible to break down the estimate of £1 billion for the Chevaline project, given by my right honourable friend the Secretary of State in another place on 24th January, into annual expenditure since to do so could reveal details of the phasing and scope of the project which are classified. Expenditure on Chevaline is borne on Vote 2 of the Supply Estimates Class I.House adjourned at twenty-three minutes past seven o'clock.
