Drivers: Working Hours Regulations

Volume 685: debated on Tuesday 10 October 2006

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Further to the Written Answer by the Lord Davies of Oldham on 8 March (WA 146-7), whether they are aware of any effective enforcement action taken by the Government of the Irish Republic in relation to repeated breaches of the drivers’ working hours regulations by Irish drivers in the United Kingdom. [HL7433]

Colleagues in the Department for Transport have recently met with their counterparts in Dublin. The Irish ministry is currently establishing a road safety authority which will be taking responsibility for a range of functions including road haulage enforcement. The department’s Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) and the new authority will be working closely to address enforcement issues including non-compliance of drivers’ hours regulations.
