Israel: Non-proliferation Treaty

Volume 686: debated on Tuesday 7 November 2006

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will make representations to the Government of Israel about the prospects of Israel joining the non-proliferation treaty, given that their arsenal of long-range weapons is estimated internationally to be larger than that of the United Kingdom.[HL7870]

We are aware of the widespread assumption that Israel possesses nuclear weapons, but note that the Israeli Government have refused to confirm it. The Government have on a number of occasions called on Israel to accede to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty as a non-nuclear weapon state, and to conclude a full scope safeguards agreement and additional protocol with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
