Afghanistan: Civilian Casualties

Volume 686: debated on Wednesday 8 November 2006

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many civilian casualties are known tohave resulted directly from NATO activities in Afghanistan this year; how many incidents have been or are currently being investigated; and how these figures compare with those publicised by the Taliban.[HL7996]

Precise figures are unavailable for civilian casualties that may be attributable to action by the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). Two incidents in which Afghan civilians may have died as a resultof NATO close air support missions remain under investigation. I am also aware of a further four Afghan civilian deaths over the course of 2006 that were the result of accidents involving ISAF troops.
