Kosovo: Christian Churches

Volume 687: debated on Thursday 30 November 2006

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have received any representations relating to the desecration or destruction of Christian churches in Kosovo. [HL244]

The British office in Pristina has regular contact with the Serb Orthodox Church about reconstruction of churches in Kosovo. The Reconstruction Implementation Commission, which oversees restoration of Serb Orthodox churches, has noted that €2.3 million was spent during 2006 on reconstruction of seven sites and that the reconstruction effort on 18 sites of 35 should be complete by the end of 2007. We have received no representations from denominations other than the Serb Orthodox Church.

The Government have regular discussions with all levels of the Kosovo Government on implementing UN endorsed standards.
