Crime: Rape

Volume 688: debated on Thursday 18 January 2007

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the proportion of successful convictions for rape in the last year for which statistics are available where guilt was established through (a) a guilty plea, and (b) a jury decision. [HL1220]

From data held by the Office for Criminal Justice Reform court proceedings database, of the 787 defendants found guilty of rape at the Crown Court in 2005, 361, or 46 per cent, pleaded guilty and 426, or 54 per cent, were found guilty by a jury decision. Information for Scotland is a matter for the Scotland Office and that for Northern Ireland for the Northern Ireland Office.
