Fishing: Drift Nets

Volume 690: debated on Tuesday 13 March 2007

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What arrangements are being made to ensure that, after the expenditure of the European Union fund of £25 million for compensation, the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas and the Irish Salmon Review Group have stopped the Irish drift-net fishery at the start of the present salmon season. [HL2341]

Enforcement of the closure of Irish drift-net fisheries is a matter for the Irish authorities. It is unlikely that the Irish Salmon Review Group will be involved, and the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) has no role in the management of the fisheries.
