Common Agricultural Policy

Volume 691: debated on Monday 16 April 2007

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the present gross cost to United Kingdom taxpayers of the common agricultural policy; how this is made up; and how much of it is returned to British farmers. [HL3126]

The United Kingdom makes its contributions to the EC budget as a whole and not to individual spending programmes within it. There is not therefore a specific United Kingdom contribution to common agricultural policy spending. In 2005—the most recent year for which outturn data are available—total common agricultural policy spending was €48.5 billion (£33.1 billion) of which the United Kingdom received €4.3 billion (£3.0 billion).
