Armed Forces: Northern Ireland Remembrance Service

Volume 691: debated on Wednesday 9 May 2007

My honourable friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Defence (Derek Twigg) has made the following Written Ministerial Statement.

I am pleased to announce plans to arrange a service of remembrance in 2008 to pay tribute to the members of the Armed Forces who lost their lives as a result of the violence in Northern Ireland. The current peace would not exist without their sacrifice and the efforts of more than 300,000 military personnel who served in the Province as well as the dedicated MoD civilians and contractors who supported them there. The service will commemorate all military and defence personnel killed or injured as a result of the situation in Northern Ireland. The Ministry of Defence will be working with veterans' organisations and other interested parties in the coming months to help us to plan the event. Further details will be announced before the end of the year.
