asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is illegal for cyclists to travel on public roads after dark without a light at the front or at the back of the cycle. [HL648]

Regulations 18 and 24 of the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 No 1796, as amended, make it illegal for cyclists to travel on public roads at night without a white light at the front and a red light at the back of the cycle.
