Elections: House of Commons

Volume 697: debated on Monday 7 January 2008

asked Her Majesty’s Government:

Whether they have any plans to change the voting system in the United Kingdom to allow for a more plural representation of parties in the House of Commons. [HL767]

There are currently no plans to change the voting system for the House of Commons. However, the Government will be publishing a review of the new voting systems introduced in the UK since 1997 to inform this debate. The review considers the experience of the voting systems introduced for the Scottish Parliament, the Assemblies for Wales and Northern Ireland, the European Parliament, the London Assembly and the London Mayoral elections since 1997. The Minister of State for Justice, Michael Wills MP, announced on 11 December 2007 that the Government have completed the review and that it is being made ready for publication in January 2008.
