Trading Representations (Disabled Persons) Act

Volume 697: debated on Wednesday 16 January 2008

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they propose that the Trading Representations (Disabled Persons) Act 1958 will continue in force; and if so why. [HL906]

The Trading Representations (Disabled Persons) Act 1958 will be repealed by the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 which implement the unfair commercial practices directive (2005/29/EC). The regulations will provide consumers with equivalent protection to the Act in relation to false representations by traders that blind or disabled persons were employed in the production, preparation or packaging of goods, or that those same persons would benefit from the sale of the goods.

Draft regulations will be laid before both Houses of Parliament in January. If approved in debate the regulations will come into force on 6 April.
