Afghanistan: Food Aid

Volume 698: debated on Thursday 31 January 2008

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What assessment they have made of the recent request by the Government of Afghanistan to the United Nations World Food Programme to increase its food aid from the previously planned 180,000 to 215,000 tonnes in 2008. [HL1355]

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the Government of Afghanistan (GoA) launched a joint appeal for $81.3 million on 24 January in response to rising food prices. Staple food prices in Afghanistan have been increasing since November 2006 as part of a global trend. DfID is currently evaluating the UNAMA and GoA proposal and we will consider how best to respond.
