Olympic Games 2012: Poverty Reduction

Volume 698: debated on Monday 4 February 2008

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether there is any quantification of the estimated contribution which the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will make to reducing poverty, deprivation and inequalities among families and households in London. [HL1189]

The 2012 Games will bring significant improvements in terms of skills training, new jobs and better quality of life, particularly in the host boroughs of Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest. Key stakeholders are working together to deliver programmes in these areas which will contribute to reducing poverty, deprivation and inequality. The impact of these programmes will be monitored and evaluated, and as data become available they will be put in the public domain.
