To ask Her Majesty's Government how many charter flights were used to remove persons from the United Kingdom under immigration statutes in 2008; and what was the total number of passengers removed on such flights. [HL799]

Charter flights used to remove persons from the United Kingdom have routinely operated since March 2001. For the period January to December 2008, there were 66 charter flights made for this purpose; and a total number of 1,529 passengers were removed on those flights. This includes both enforced and voluntary returns.

These figures do not constitute part of national statistics as they are based on internal management information. The information has not been quality assured under national statistics protocols and should be treated as provisional and subject to change.
