Asked by

To ask Her Majesty's Government how many general practitioners there were in the National Health Service in (a) 1998, and (b) 2008. [HL2110]

Figures for the number of general practitioners employed by the National Health Service in England in 2008 will be available when the new NHS workforce census is published on the 25 March 2009. The table below gives the number employed in the NHS in England in 1998 and the available figure from the last workforce census which was published in April 2008.
