To ask Her Majesty's Government whether their relations with Syria have altered as a result of recent visits by ministers and parliamentarians. [HL2301]

The UK has recently stepped up engagement with Syria, culminating with my right honourable friend the Foreign Secretary's visit to Syria in November 2008. This has aimed to encourage Syria to be a force for stability in the region, in particular through working with Lebanon for stability; having indirect talks with Israel; backing the Arab peace initiative; improving relationships with Arab partners; tackling foreign fighters on its border with Iraq; working with Iran to stop finance and arms supply to Hezbollah; and working to counterterrorism.
