Diplomatic Relations

Volume 711: debated on Monday 15 June 2009

Question

Asked by

To ask Her Majesty's Government which are the member states of the United Nations where the United Kingdom shares diplomatic relations with another state. [HL3995]

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has missions in over 200 countries and, in some of these countries, represents the interests of other nations.

The overall number of countries where this is the case will vary according to a number of different factors, such as if a country holds the presidency of a particular organisation, and requests that the UK represents its interests during its presidency.

However, this information is not held centrally, and to provide a comprehensive list of countries where we represent the interests of other nations, or where other nations represent the interests of the UK, would incur disproportionate cost.
