Higher Education Funding Council

Volume 712: debated on Wednesday 1 July 2009

Question

Asked by

To ask Her Majesty's Government when they asked the Higher Education Funding Council (HEFC) to ensure that the new research excellence framework reflects the quality of researchers’ contribution to policy making and public engagement; when the HEFC’s response is expected; and whether they will place copies of the request, and of the response when it is received, in the Library of the House. [HL4106]

The Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills’ grant letter to the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) of 21 January 2009 said that the research excellence framework (REF),

“should continue to incentivise research excellence, but also reflect the quality of researchers’ contribution to public policy making and to public engagement, and not create disincentives to researchers moving between academia and the private sector”.

The grant letter is available on the HEFCE website and a copy will be placed in both the Libraries of the House.
