Health: Dementia

Volume 715: debated on Monday 7 December 2009

Asked by

To ask Her Majesty's Government what information they have on the over-prescription of antipsychotics to people with dementia; whether they are treating it as a breach of human rights causing serious side-effects and the risk of fatalities; and what further action they will be taking in response to the representations made on that issue by the Alzheimer's Society. [HL388]

Professor Sube Banerjee was asked by the Government to undertake an independent clinical review of the use of anti-psychotic drugs. Professor Banerjee's report, published on 12 November 2009, was welcomed by the Government and his recommendations were accepted. Implementation of the conclusions of the report will be led and monitored by the new National Clinical Director for Dementia who will be appointed in January 2010, and by the National Dementia Strategy Implementation Board.
