Prisons: Chaplains

Volume 715: debated on Monday 7 December 2009

Questions

Asked by

To ask Her Majesty's Government why there has been a delay in confirming the appointment of the Buddhist chaplain nominated for HM Prison Bedford. [HL224]

I understand that the delay in confirming the appointment of the Buddhist chaplain at HMP Bedford was caused by a misunderstanding of the security vetting process and how this enabled the new chaplain to be paid as a sessional worker. Payment arrangements will be initiated shortly.

Asked by

To ask Her Majesty's Government what is the average time between the nomination of a non-Christian, non-Muslim chaplain to an appointment in HM Prison Service and the start date of the appointment. [HL225]

For all directly employed chaplains the average time would vary between 20 and 25 weeks, including all stages of the recruitment, vetting and appointment process.
