Cyprus: Turkish Language

Volume 717: debated on Tuesday 2 February 2010

Question

Asked by

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they will discuss with the European Commission the status of Turkish as an official language of Cyprus under the constitution of Cyprus, with a view to ensuring that there should be no discrimination based on language in the employment of Turkish-speaking citizens of Cyprus by the institutions of the European Union. [HL1583]

The Government agree there should be no discrimination based on language in the employment of Turkish speaking citizens of Cyprus by EU institutions. The UK recognises that Turkish is an official language of the Republic of Cyprus but does not intend to discuss this matter with the European Commission because Turkish speaking citizens are already employed at the Commission's offices in Cyprus.
