Asked by

To ask Her Majesty's Government how much they are spending promoting the English language abroad. [HL1578]

In 2008-09 the British Council spent £133 million globally on developing a wider knowledge of the English Language, of which £117 million was English language services delivered on a full cost recovery basis and £16 million coming from government grants.
