To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many people were employed in breweries producing (a) below 5,000, (b) between 5,000 and 30,000, (c) between 30,000 and 60,000, (d) between 60,000 and 200,000 and (e) above 200,000 hectare litres of beer in each year since 1997.

As National Statistician, I have been asked to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question concerning how many people were employed in breweries producing (a) below 5,000, (b) between 5,000 and 30,000, (c) between 30,000 and 60,000, (d) between 60,000 and 200,000 and (e) above 200,000 hectare litres of beer in each year since 1997. The table below shows the number of employees in the manufacture of beer industry (SIC 15.96) for Great Britain for each year from 1998 to 2004. A breakdown of employment by the volume of output of businesses within the industry is not available.
