I wish to present a massive petition with well over 6,000 signatures, superbly organised by David Cain, a redoubtable campaigner, and compiled with the help of many excellent people including Mr. Moir, Steve Lant, landlord of the Haystack pub on Canvey Island, John at the fast-rejuvenating Canvey Island football club, and Jim Neven of Canvey Island Royal British Legion.

It is at times like this—times of celebration and reflection like Christmas and Easter—when we most miss our loved ones who are serving our country in the armed services abroad so valiantly and professionally, and when we most want to communicate with them. I am honoured and delighted to present this petition, which states:

To the House of Commons

The Petition of David Cain, residents of Essex, Dorset and others, declares

That the cost of sending parcels and letters to members of HM Armed Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan is inequitable in relation to the nature of their work and to the commitment they have made to serve their country.

Therefore, your Petitioners implore the Government to adopt a policy of free postage to members of HM Armed Forces for families and friends in the UK in recognition of the contribution made by these brave men.
