To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) by what mechanism he calculated the amount to be paid by Northern Rock for the guarantee given by the Government to that company's depositors; and if he will make a statement;

(2) what discussions he has had about the treatment for accounting purposes of the guarantee given to Northern Rock depositors; and if he will make a statement.
