To ask the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families which local education authorities participated in the (a) initial and (b) subsequent pilot using synthetic phonics to teach children to read.

The Early Reading Development pilot (ERDp) ran in 18 local authorities during 2005/06.

The local authorities involved in this pilot were:

In 2006/07, the Communication, Language and Literacy Development (CLLD) programme was developed, implementing the recommendations from the Rose Review. 32 further local authorities participated in the programme (in addition to the 18 local authorities who had been involved in the ERDp):
