British Council: Manpower

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many people the British Council employs in (a) the UK and (b) overseas.

As published in the Annual Report for the British Council (2008-09) the numbers of permanent staff employed are as follows:

(a) In the UK—1,094

(b) Overseas—6,390 (including 1,815 teachers)
