asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he has had with the United States Government about the implications for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Central America of the role of United States warships operating in the vicinity of Nicaragua; and if he will make a statement.

My right hon. and learned Friend and other Ministers and officials regularly discuss important issues,  including the situation in Central America, with the United States Administration and they are fully aware of our views.

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is his assessment of the implications for the possibility of a peaceful settlement to the conflict in Central America of the supply of arms to the Contra forces in Nicaragua.

Mr. Eggar
We do not believe the problems of the region can be resolved by armed force and have constantly urged restraint on all sides. We have clearly demonstrated our support for a political solution to the problems of Central America on the basis of the Contadora objectives. Our actions have been, and will remain, consistent with that policy.
