Figures for September 1979 and September 1985 are shown in the table. Figures were not collected centrally for June 1979 and February 1986.

A breakdown of these figures by local authority for 1985 is not yet available. The provisional total for England is 598 children, a decrease of 16 per cent. over 1984. This compares with an 8 per cent. decline in the total figures for children in care.
