Nationalised Industries (Chairmen's Salaries)

asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he will make a statement on the cost of increases in salary to chairmen of the boards of nationalised industries.

The total cost of the salary increases for chairmen of major nationalised industry boards, announced on 7th August to take effect from 1st January, 1971, is about £25,000. It must be borne in mind that at the salary levels of these chairmen a large proportion of this increase returns to the Exchequer in tax.
