To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what statutory responsibility will be placed on local authorities to implement the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive. [126019]

The EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive does not place direct responsibilities on local authorities. The Government are preparing UK implementation of the directive and is discussing with local authorities how best to involve them in maximising use of the existing waste collection infrastructure so as to enable producers and retailers to meet their obligations under the directive.
