Steelworks, Corby (Air And Water Pollution Regulations)

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what estimate the Alkali Inspectorate has made of the cost to the British Steel Corporation of modifications to meet the requirements of its regulations in respect of air and water pollution from steelworks in Corby, Northamptonshire, and elsewhere, respectively; and if it will review the regulations.

Standards for the emission of grit, dust and fumes were determined by the Inspectorate last January, after full discussion with the industry, and I do not think they call for review. The Inspectorate are discussing with the British Steel Corporation the application of these standards at Corby, having due regard to costs and other factors. No estimate of the costs has been made.Water pollution is not the concern of the Alkali Inspectorate, but of the river authorities.
