Mr. King
The Government themselves do not make loans to local authorities under the Inner Urban Areas Act. That Act enables local authorities for designated districts to assist industry and commerce in their area by means of loans and grants, which may be given loan sanction or grant through the Government's urban programme. To the end of December 1979, urban programme support has been approved for a total of just over £3 million in loans and grants in England. Of this, some £1·8 million is for manufacturing industry and £1·2 million for service industry.
