To ask the Secretary of State for Education what proportion of A-level candidates in 1970, 1980, 1990 and in the latest statistics passed in mathematics and physics.

In England, the proportion of A-level candidates who achieved a pass in mathematics and physics in 1992 was 16 and 10·4 per cent. respectively. Information on a similar basis for earlier years is not available centrally.
