To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many children in Wales qualified for free school meals in 1992–93; and if he will also provide these figures as a percentage of the total school roll.

From provisional schools census data, 98,466 pupils in LEA-maintained schools in Wales were entitled to free meals at September 1992. This represented 20·6 per cent. of the total school roll.
