Sickness Benefit (Departmental Committee)
asked whether the Government took the advice of the chief actuary on the Insurance Commission when they left Wales outside the scope of the inquiry of the Departmental Committee into excessive sickness and deficiencies under the National Insurance Act?
I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to the hon. Member for Salisbury on the 2nd instant, to which I have nothing to add.
Customs And Excise (Statistical Office)
asked the Secretary to the Treasury whether the Board of Customs and Excise propose to fill the vacancy for a senior clerk in the Statistical Office; whether he can state the reasons for delaying the appointment; and whether it is the intention to promote a member of the Statistical Office staff to fill the vacancy, having regard to the statement of the chairman of the Board of Customs and Excise before the Royal Commission on the Civil Service, in reply to question 14,154, to the effect that the run of promotion for a junior clerk is straight up the office to senior clerkship?
The vacancy in question has been filled from the Statistical Office staff.
Railways And Harbours (County Kerry)
asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland the sums paid annually by the county of Kerry since 1890 for railway and harbour guarantees, giving the names of the railways and harbours in each case, and the total sum for all in this period?
I have forwarded to the hon: Member a Statement, which has been prepared from the audited abstracts of the accounts of the Kerry County Council, showing the expenditure of that council in respect of each railway and harbour guarantee for each year since 1900. The figures for the years previous to 1900 are not available.
Corkaguiny Barony, County Kerry
asked the Chief Secretary the total-amount levied off the barony of Corkaguiny, county Kerry, since 1890, giving each year separately, and the valuation of this barony?
The Local Government Board are unable to state the total amount of rates levied off this barony during the years mentioned in the question. The information could only be obtained from the local authorities, to whom I would refer the hon. Member.
Brecon And Merthyr Railway (Fleurde-Lys) Bridge
asked the President of the Board of Trade whether it has been brought to his notice that the deputy-coroner for Monmouthshire sent a letter to the Bedwellty Urban District Council, stating that a bridge passing under the Brecon and Merthyr Railway, at Fleur-de-Lys, had been described by witnesses, at an inquest held by him upon the body of a child killed by a runaway horse at this spot, as being a veritable death-trap; and whether, seeing that the district council appear to be disinclined to take any action in the matter, he will take the necessary steps to get the railway company to remove this source of danger?
My attention has not previously been called to this matter, but I will ask the railway company for their observations upon my hon. Friend's question, and will communicate with him upon receipt of their reply.
